The design area Vazha-Sphavela is located in the northwest of the city center, realized during the 1960s and 70s.Today the microdistric is facing various problems – the general lack of housing, the low insulation of the existing housing but also a general need for renovations, and the gentrification processes happening in the surrounding neighborhood. Chaotic organization of mobility and open spaces require new design approaches. The aim of the design studio was to elaborate strategies in order to transform and develop the neighborhood in a sustainable way with respect to the existing structures. How can the open space be improved? How can a sustainable mobility network with an emphasis of walkability be organized? How can new functions be implemented? Expected wwere innovative concepts, that define guiding strategies for the transformation of the entire district and show single spatial interventions for improving the housing conditions and living environment.
