Renovation of Devolanivsky and Polsky Descents, Mytna Square and Platonivsky Mole
Task of the studio was to elaborate urban concepts that show future prospects for renovating a territory in Odesa's historical area, considering the possibilities for providing livable conditions, activity, and recreation for the city's inhabitants, not only of this neighborhood but also those who come here from other parts of the city and tourists. The renovation of Devolanivsky and Polsky Descents, Mytna Square, and Platonivsky Mole is a critical task for Odesa. These significant cultural and historical landmarks contribute to the city's unique character. However, over time, these areas have fallen into disrepair and require attention to preserve their cultural heritage. Moreover, these areas are essential links between the city's port, transportation hubs, and the historical center.
The design area is located in the central part of the historical center of Odesa and covers an area of 27 hectares. The area is bordered to the east and south by the port area within the Nova Harbour (north), Karantinna Balka and Devolanivsky Descent (south), the Stroganivsky Bridge (west) and the Black Sea. The design studio's objective is to develop urban concepts that demonstrate the predicted functional, typological and architectural spatial prospects for renovating the territory in Odesa's historical area. It is essential to consider the provision of liveable conditions, activity, and recreation for the city's inhabitants, including those residing in this district and visitors from other parts of the city and tourists. The planning and spatial reorganization of the territory should address the following issues: What tangible and intangible values are present in this area, and what role can they play in making architectural decisions? Furthermore, it is crucial to assess the feasibility of new construction, taking into account the planning restrictions currently in place on the site.
