Urban Design Class „Lasna!dee. Perspectives for Resilient Neighborhoods in Kuristiku / Tallinn“

Kuristiku with around 11,500 inhabitants is a neighorhood in the Lasnamäe /Tallinn was realized during the 1970s–80s. Today the soviet legacy – microdistricts formed by prefabricated buildings is facing various challenges and problems. Built as a sleeping district the area lacks until today other functions, such as working places and cultural venues. More over the territory is partly cut off from its surroundings. As there is a concentration of Russian inhabitants as well problems in terms of social isolation and barriers exist. At the same time vast open territories offer great potential for creating meeting places and support strategies for climate adaption and mitigation. Active civil engagement, e.g. Lasna!dee, a local community movement in the neighborhood foster the transformation, taking into account the residents‘ need. Task of the studio is the development of a visionary yet feasible adaptation strategy for Kuristiku in the broader context of Lasnamäe. A master plan for a selected area sholud demonstrate how the urban fabric, housing blocks, courtyards, streets, and service zones — can be retrofitted, reused, and reprogrammed in order to support a more sustainable resilient future. The design work is being carried out in cooperation with local stakeholders—the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA), the city planning office, and initiatives of the civil society such as the NGO Lasna!dee in Tallinn. In order to keep the participating partners and the interested public informed about the progress of the design, a blog will be established, on which weekly highlights of the project activities as well as notes and comments will be posted.
